You Take Your Nervous System Everywhere You Go

Your nervous system doesn't stay home, you take it everywhere with you. It's present in every interaction, meeting, email, collaboration, and decision. It's present in how you handle conflict, give feedback, and lead. It shapes what you create and how, whether that's a product, a strategy, or a work of art.

For many of the people I work with, especially those managing anxiety, past trauma, attachment wounds, or perfectionism, this isn't news. You already have a felt sense of how your body carries "something" into your day that your calendar doesn't account for. What often is news is that experiencing your nervous system's responses to challenging situations doesn't mean something is wrong with you. We all feel particular sensations when we're stressed. Once you understand the mechanics, a lot of what's felt confusing or shameful starts to make more sense, and you can learn to shift out of a reactive wiring response and back into a more resilient state.

How your nervous system works

Long before you consciously think anything, your nervous system is scanning your environment and the people in it. It wants to make a judgment call: is this safe, or is this a threat? This happens beneath awareness, shaped by your history, your attachment patterns, your cultural upbringing, and what your body has learned to expect from people and situations. If you grew up needing to stay hyperaware of a caregiver's mood, or learned early that mistakes weren't safe, your nervous system adapted accordingly. That adaptation likely served you then. It may not be serving you now, especially if it shows up as anxiety before a 1:1 with your manager, a felt sense of danger in intimacy, or a perfectionism that never lets you rest because some part of you is still looking for what might go wrong.

This is also why insight alone about an issue you're grappling with often isn't enough. You can understand your patterns intellectually and still feel flooded with sensation and emotion in the moment, or shutdown and go numb. Learning to work with your nervous system’s automatic reactivity, rather than trying to go around it, is often where real change happens in therapy.

Why understanding your nervous system matters

Many of my clients work in environments where the ideal is speed, 24/7 availability, and relentless optimization, conditions that can be especially activating for a nervous system already working hard to feel safe. If your worth at work has ever felt tied to how quickly you respond, how many things you're responsible for at once, or how seamless you make things look, it's worth taking a moment to get a felt sense of how your nervous system is doing. Are you buzzing? Feeling numb? Exhausted? Excited? Happy? How long has it been since your body experienced a genuine signal of safety? Or has your home life or work environment required you to stay vigilant for so long that activation has become your baseline?

Perfectionism and anxiety often intersect for the clients I work with. Perfectionism can look like high standards from the outside, but underneath it's frequently a nervous system trying to prevent a threat, such as criticism, rejection, or failure, by controlling every variable in advance.

Understanding your nervous system can also change how you relate to others, not just your work. If closeness has felt more dangerous than distance, or if you find yourself pulling away right when things start to feel good, that's often your nervous system protecting you based on what it learned closeness used to cost.

Recognizing the difference between a regulated and a dysregulated state

Once you can recognize the difference between a regulated and a dysregulated state in your own body, you gain access to choice you didn't have before. You can catch the moment perfectionism kicks in before it runs the whole day. You can notice the urge to withdraw from someone you care about and get curious about it instead of acting on it automatically. You can tell the difference between genuine urgency and an overblown internal alarm. That recognition is often the first real intervention, before any strategy or skill gets applied.

Understanding your nervous system means having language for what's happening in your body, so that instead of "something is wrong with me," you can start to recognize, "something is happening in me, and I can get curious about it." That shift, from shame to curiosity, is often where real regulation begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to have a "dysregulated nervous system"?

Dysregulation refers to a nervous system that is not in balance. This can mean hyper-activated with anxiety, racing thoughts, and difficulty resting, or hypo-activated with numbness, disconnection, and fatigue that sleep doesn't fix. It's not a diagnosis, rather it's a description of how your body is feeling in any given moment or chronically overtime.

Can you actually change your nervous system, or is this just how I am?

The nervous system is adaptable throughout life, a capacity often referred to as neuroplasticity. Patterns that formed early or under stress can shift with the right kind of repeated experience, particularly relational experience, which is a large part of why therapy itself can be an effective intervention, not just talking about the pattern, but experiencing something different within a safe relationship.

I understand my patterns intellectually. Why don't they change?

This is one of the most common experiences clients bring into my office. Insight lives in a different part of the brain than the automatic, body-based responses that drive anxiety, shutdown, or reactivity. Real change usually requires working with the body's felt experience directly, not just understanding the pattern from the outside. This is part of why therapy that includes somatic or nervous-system-informed approaches can reach what talk alone can't.

How is this different from just managing stress?

Stress management often focuses on reducing external demands or adding coping strategies on top of an already dysregulated baseline. Nervous system work goes a layer deeper: it's about building your baseline capacity to feel safe, so you're not just coping with activation, you're changing your relationship to it.

Is this relevant even if I don't have a trauma history?

Yes. While early or significant trauma shapes the nervous system in specific ways, everyone's nervous system has been shaped by their history, relationships, and environment, including the pace and demands of a high-pressure career. You don't need a significant trauma history for this work to be relevant or useful.

How would we work on this together in therapy?

Depending on what you're bringing in, this might include somatic and sensorimotor approaches, attachment-focused work, or contemplative practices that build your capacity to notice and shift your internal state in real time. The goal isn't to eliminate stress responses, they're a normal part of being human, but to expand your capacity to recognize them and respond with choice rather than automatic reactivity.
